Turkey in high chair
Most who know us well understand how crazy we are about our cat Turkey. You won’t meet many cats like him — he’s surprisingly outgoing and über-affectionate.  Not at all “cat-like”. More like a dog!  And… cue the eye-rolls from the dog lovers.

After rescuing him as a sickly runt from a rough Brooklyn animal shelter over 7 years ago, we nursed him to complete health and still think of him as our little baby. I was even acutely allergic to him at first, and endured 6 months of allergy shots in my rear, just so my throat would stop seizing up. Boy, was I nuts for him. Getting rid of him back then was SO not an option.

Back then, before baby Max.

As heartwrenching as it was, we decided to begin our tour life in January without Turkey just for the first few months, so we could focus on learning how best to travel with a toddler. It was the fairest scenario for our sweet, runty kitty. One of my best friends from college, Alicia, agreed to foster him in Portland. The only catch: her boyfriend Jerry might be allergic. But he was open to trying it out — which we were so thankful for, as many of our trustworthy foster home options had crumbled away.

Despite a rough initial allergy (quelled by this amazing product), Jerry now thinks of Turkey as his little buddy. As Alicia works 70-hour weeks as a first-year medical resident, Turkey keeps Jerry warm at home, and they are thick as thieves. In a recent email to me, Jerry wrote: “I’ve been a dog lover all my life but after hanging out with Turkey I can’t see how you guys can be away from him this long. He is almost human like. LOL!”

And a few words about Jerry: he’s an ex-NFL defensive lineman. He’s 6’5″ and 300 lbs.  Don’t they look so cute cuddled up together?

We were separated from our cat for a while when we decided to travel abroad — we missed him too, but they are resilient! It’s harder for us humans than them if they are with a good foster home 🙂 Sounds like Turkey may not wanna leave lol!
