Valentine’s Day with TWO guys, in Richmond, VA!

We are reunited!

After one tough month of being apart, Mike flew from Minneapolis to Richmond with the cast and crew of The Lion King; Max and I also took two flights across the country from San Francisco to Richmond (via a short layover in Dallas/Fort Worth) and fell into the arms of Da-Da at the airport. Not a moment too soon – it was Valentine’s Day!

Tonight, we checked out the Can Can Brasserie in Carytown, a wonderfully bustling strip of cafes, eateries, boutiques and furniture shops. They were able to accommodate us last minute on this romantic holiday, in their back private dining room that had this rather shocking yellow hue to their lights. I think they banished us back there because of our intially grumpy toddler — but it worked out just fine!

Max really wanted wine, with whine. Mike suggested, “Maybe when he’s twelve, we’ll be real European about parenting and offer him small sips.” I looked at him and said, “For his twelfth birthday, let’s get him his own growler.”

The food was delicious — oysters on the half shell, rockfish, braised veal, wild mushrooms and mac & cheese with gruyere. Our kid is livin’ the high life!

Everything was so rich and yummy that Max had to pick his nose to equalize his pleasure.

“Mama, will you be my Valentine?”

Mike and Max share a Lemon & Cream Cheese Soufflé with Carrot Cake.

We tried to work off dinner by sauntering down a few blocks of Carytown, admiring the colorful storefronts. Here, Mike and Max stop at World of Mirth — a toy store for kids of all ages!

The World of Mirth window was such a trip! This store is often described as a place where Pee Wee’s Playhouse meets Dr. Seuss…

We stumbled upon The Eatery, empty on Valentine’s but supposedly has great Chinese food, fried chicken, and sandwiches. Definitely not a place for romance, but … an adventure for another day perhaps?
