Skyping with Dada and Elmo

We’re rounding Week Five of our initial tour separation. While we make it doable, it’s always sad and exhausting to be apart. Mike scurried off to Minneapolis to join the Lion King tour after the Vegas production closed at the end of the year, and Max and I packed up the yellow bungalow on Rainbow Dream Avenue — with the life-saving help of my sister Eileen, friend Misa and neighbors Amber and Lincoln. We made the drive to the Bay Area in about 10 hours.

Here, Max and I are staying at my father’s vacant condo in Fremont, giving me a chance to help out with some family affairs. I found Max a great swim school in nearby Newark, and an in-home daycare (like Nora’s!) in Union City. What did people do before Google, Yelp and Craigslist??

And how did people keep their marriages alive before Skype? Every morning, we see each other. Every night before bed, we chat again. Mike brought Max’s Elmo puppet with him to Minne, and since he does a dead-on Elmo impression, it’s been fun to catch up with the little red monster as well. We will record video of one of our chats soon so you can witness the insanity. In the meantime, here’s a screenshot of us (looking very disheveled!) this morning:

Mike claims Max looks much older now… and it’s true. In just 5 weeks, he’s become a true little boy, complete with the cuddling, freakouts, and wisdom only toddlers can impart. Max literally surprises me with a few new words everyday. Today, it was “towel”, “yuck” and “Jana” (my cousin’s sweet little 5-month-old baby).

Just 11 more days until we reunite in Richmond, VA!

Skype is probably responsible for keeping modern families together for the last few years! These Elmo conversations look very fun. We are looking forward to the video.
