Pit stops: Mobile, AL and Breaux Bridge, LA

To get through the 16+ hour car journey from Greenville, SC to Houston, TX, we had to make a few pit stops along the way.  Both Max and Turkey were fairly miserable on the first leg, since we shoved off around 5 pm and the nighttime darkness frustrated the toddler and banished the cat to his carrier for the first 7 hours. There’s nothing like the low-grade whine of a 23-month-old mixed in with the yowling of a kitty scratching the stuffing out of the inside of his cloth carrier to make you want to drive the car right off a cliff.

It also downpoured during the first few hours which made the roads slick and driving intense. We finally reached Mobile, AL at midnight and bedded down at the La Quinta Inn until 7 am. After a standard breakfast at a crusty Denny’s outside the motel, we were ready for the next 8 hours.

Driving during daylight hours was infinitely better. Turkey was able to roam around the car and stare out the window, and Max was in a fabulous mood with his iPad movies and new Lion King show book. In fact, here he is passed out behind the book, mid-read.

The moment we were searching for lunch turned out to be a happy accident, as we were driving through the thick of Louisiana. We had been resigned to eating at a McDonald’s or Subway when we randomly turned off of I-10 in Breaux Bridge to this glorious Cajun hole-in-the-wall:

In true Hollick fashion yet again, we got an oyster po-boy, fried chicken, red beans and rice, and fries at Chicken on the Bayou. Everything was hot-out-of-the-frier and fast, yet divinely authentic and satisfying. And totally grimey. We were transported back to our decadent time in New Orleans a few months ago, where we weighed in 10 pounds heavier upon departing.

It was boiling hot out, and of course Max had the biggest poop of his young life before we left the restaurant. There was absolutely no place to change him cleanly in the tiny Chicken in the Bayou bathroom, so we carried him outside to the parking lot and had him stand on the hood of our car while it took both of us to pit crew him.

We made it to Houston in good time despite a tornado watch through St. Tammany Parish in Louisiana, and we’ll have our Insta-Home Challenge: Houston for you shortly. It’s kind of a doozy!
