Architects of Air: Exxopolis Luminarium in Austin, TX

My 13-week fetus and I sauntered through the Architects of Air: Exxopolis Luminarium exhibit at the Long Center for the Performing Arts in Austin, Texas.

The exhibit from the outside, on a gorgeous Austin morning, appeared as an elaborate child’s jumpy complex. A dragon, or a space-age caterpillar, perhaps?

After removing our shoes, the Hollicks and the Cordileones entered a world of color that shifted with the weather and the sunlight, lit on curved walls and tunnels made of PVC.

Lots of kids were literally bouncing off the walls…

… but one kiddo was not a fan. An overwhelmed Max cried the moment he stepped foot inside. “All done! I wanna go outside, I’m all done!” he sobbed, as the interior was very warm and possibly stifling, and the colors were jarring — even for an adult. Mike and I took turns with Max outside while the other went through the exhibit.

Many adults (sans children, of course!) actually found the whole experience calming and peaceful. Couples were cozied up in little pockets.

There were many routes to traverse, and amazingly, no exit signs.

Is this what a red blood cell feels like, bounding through the veins of the human body?

Nick, evolving out of an eye.

It’s a trippy place to do some gymnastics for Hero.

A colorful crash landing!

At times I felt like we were trapped in the spa of a space station!

Nick looks like a mite on the underside of a leaf.
