20 weeks pregnant: Into the 4th dimension

So, little baby lady was featured in a motion picture already — a 4D Ultrasound (or 4D Live Motion Imaging), more precisely! Here’s where you shake you head and mutter, “Technology, technology, technology…” This stuff will blow your mind. 4D is a continuous 3D scanning of the baby, so you see it move in real time. The ultrasound tech told me, “It’s as if we inserted a scope into your uterus and took video footage of what we see.”

On a routine 20 week checkup at an OB/GYN in Omaha, I was getting an ultrasound to measure cervical length, as I am considered somewhat “high-risk” since Max was born so early. Normally, 4D Ultrasound isn’t done until the fetus is at least 27 weeks, when there’s more mass to view. But as we were doing the boring old (yawn) standard ultrasound, the lively tech switched over to 3D, then exclaimed, “Wow, she sure is chubby! I think we’ll try this…” Et, voila:

Hello, baby. Chubby, sweet 4th dimensional baby.

The tech kept claiming how this was the best 20-week picture in 4D she’s seen to date. “Ordinarily at 20 weeks, they look like Skeletor, so we don’t like to show parents that.” What gets me is how she already resembles Max when he was just a few days old!

Max (left) had been born prematurely at 32 weeks, and was just a day old in this photo. Little lady on the right is measuring right on course, and I’m determined to bake her as long as I possibly can!
